These days there are so many rules about what you can and cannot do in an office. Health is a consideration, some people cannot tolerate smoke. You have to also consider the smell that lingers from white sage smudging. Don’t forget safety, anything with flames is discouraged in an office!
There are many options you have, keeping your sage cleaning smoke-free, and safe.
How to sage smudge an office
There are two parts to any sage clearing. First there is the white sage, sweetgrass, cedar or lavender. The other half is the blessing or intent. Here are some ideas of what you can do for an office space without stepping on anyone’s toes or breaking company rules:
Sage clean without the smoke
While it’s traditional to use white sage smoke for your smudging, why not use a sage smudging wand without burning it? Go through the motions, blessing each corner, just as you would, just don’t light the sage.
Another idea is to make your own “potpourri” out of white sage, sweetgrass, cedar, and/or lavender. You can include blessings as well, perhaps key words on pieces of paper such as peace, prosperity, team, success. Once a month refresh the potpourri by pouring out onto a cloth or paper and carefully placing back in the container. This would be a good time to renew your blessings/intent.
Remember your ally, salt.
Salt has been used for clearing energy by many around the world. You can buy a Himalayan salt lamp to keep on your desk. Here’s an example of a salt lamp:
Another idea is to use salt rocks. These are simply large chunks of salt. You can place a few pieces in a bowl and place under your desk or in a “not so obvious” place. The salt attracts water, and energy. Check the bowl periodically, pour out any liquid. Keep the rest of your salt in the bag, sealed! I’ve seen “not so well sealed” bags of salt, including magnesium salt, liquify. You can use whatever salt you would like, I prefer salt rocks, and himalayan salt.
Remember your intent
Give some focus to your reason for sage cleaning your office. Keep the blessings or intent clean, on a soul level, supporting all who work at or visit your office.
Use prayer as your sage
You can also use prayer for your white sage clearing. Here are a few ideas, you could use a different one each time you do your energy clearing! Stand in the middle of the room and face east, and say your blessing statement. Turn to the south, and repeat, then west followed by north. We’re not done yet! Offer your blessing/request upward, inviting divine spirit, and then downward toward mother earth. Last, but never least, close your eyes and focus inward, and say your prayer once more.
Find your comfort level for the volume of your prayer. You can say your prayer out loud, whispered, or silently. I like the whisper, as it involves more than one of your senses in the sage clearing event.
Now let’s choose a prayer or intent:
- The lords prayer is a powerful prayer, and has been used for energy clearing and blessing for many years. I have used this prayer at times when I have felt a negative presence.
- You can use a mantra, as simple as “om”, or a phrase such as “Om Mani Padme Hum”, a popular, simple, but powerful mantra. What does Om mani padme hum mean? As shared on dharma-haven.org: “Thus the six syllables, Om Mani Padme Hum, mean that in dependence on the practice which is in indivisible union of method and wisdom, you can transform your impure body, speech and mind into the pure body, speech, and mind of a Buddha.” Here’s another of my favorites, recorded mantras with music by artist Imee Ooi: Mantras in Sanskrit
- What about writing your own blessing statement? Keep it clean, not focusing on the problem level, but inviting all to the level of peace, cooperation, joy, happiness, and success.
Good luck with your smoke-free office sage cleaning!
