A reader asked the question, “Can I keep my bible clean using white sage smudging?” Some may consider a bible to be clean and pure by nature. Others would say, “The only thing you should ever do is pray.” What an idea, keeping a bible clean by using smudging with white sage, sweetgrass, or cedar! Let’s not offer you answers, but instead give you a few thoughts to consider.
Intent – Choosing your words
John 1:1 – In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
One thing interesting about white sage smudging is the amount of consideration it is given. Thoughts are putting energy into words, and words are powerful.
Luke 5:16 – And he withdrew himself into the wilderness, and prayed.
White sage smudging is associated with nature. The prayers used in white sage smudging are focused on love, honor, and appreciation. When smudging you ask for the support of the four directions, great father spirit, and great mother earth.
Why the wilderness? Nature makes it easier for you to shift from your electronic obsessions (yes, I said it) and focus on your problems, and re-tune to the vibration where spirit can reside.
Prayer and Smudging – Creating a stronger alliance
Deuteronomy 6:5 – And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.
Which side do you want to live on, the side of separation, segregation, or “divide and conquer”. We have enough of that already, wouldn’t you say? What does prayer do? It brings you closer to God, giving you strength. Do you pray, and then turn your back on everything you just prayed about? No, you carry your strength of character into everything you do. At least that’s the idea. Pray by singing, clapping your hands. Pray within, and pray with nature. Pray for yourself, and pray for others. “..With all thy might.”
Psalm 51:10 Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.
But really.. the bible and white sage smudging?
Psalm 51:19 then will you delight in right sacrifices, in burnt offerings and whole burnt offerings;
There you have it – in words straight out of the bible. There is a strong thread of intent about giving back. Smudging is a way of sharing our commitment and desire for a good life. It is a ceremony, which means sacred act.

What effect do you think it would have on your bible reading and your prayer to start with creating a safe and sacred space? The whole idea of using white sage smudging focuses on creating a safe space, committing your thoughts and actions to honor. Isn’t this a way of investing yourself, going in “whole heartedly”?
Ever hear the expression, “Practice what you preach”? If God has given us the ability to live our own life, isn’t it up to us to bring our dedication to love and light into every corner of our world? Smudging is a statement to live with honor. When I pick up my bible I do so with clean hands, with my mind free from distraction. Smudging is just another layer of honor offered with “all thine heart”.
